What is a Tax Clearance Certificate?
A Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) — now formally called an Approval to Transact (ATA) — is an official document from SARS confirming that a company or individual is tax-compliant.
It proves that you have:
- •✅ No outstanding tax returns
- •✅ No unpaid tax debts
- •✅ Been registered and are in good standing with SARS
When Do You Need a Tax Clearance Certificate?
| Situation | Requirement |

Requirements to Apply for a TCC
Before applying, ensure:
- •✅ You have an active SARS registration number (Income Tax / VAT / PAYE)

- •✅ No outstanding tax debt, or a formal payment arrangement in place
- •✅ Your banking details on SARS are up to date
How to Apply for a Tax Clearance Certificate Online
Via SARS eFiling (efiling.sars.gov.za):
- Log in to your SARS eFiling account
- Click "Tax Clearance Status" from the left menu
- Select "My Compliance Profile"
- Click "Request TCS PIN"
- Select the purpose (Good Standing, Tender, etc.)
- Submit and receive your TCS PIN instantly (or within 24 hours)
The TCS PIN can be shared with government entities and companies to verify your compliance online — there is no longer a physical paper certificate.
How Long is a Tax Clearance Certificate Valid?
The ATA / TCS PIN is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. After 12 months, you must apply for a new one.
What if SARS Rejects Your TCC Application?
Common reasons for rejection:
- •Outstanding tax returns not filed
- •Tax debt not paid or no arrangement in place
- •Incorrect information on SARS profile
Solution: File outstanding returns first, settle debts, then re-apply.
